I started but there were too many messages to deal with, so I hoped other people would deal with some as well!

I reported every one of these but it doesn't seem to do any good! Maybe if we all contact the senders direct, it will help? I don't know but all these things are either illegal or require a RX. They need to be stopped - this black market crap. JW

Wow!

When I first glanced at the ng I thought Stiletto was going balls out on new product promotion. On closer inspection, yeah, lots of annoying spam.

Will do my bit and report all.

And another benefit of reporting all this crap is that once reported, the posts are removed from one's list of ng topics. So you don't need to look at dozens of ads for scorpion venom botox and benzos.

Wait...are we POSITIVE Stiletto's not marketing new products here?

Yup... but with literally dozens of these at a time, all from (apparently) the same sender... I can't deal with all of them all at once.
Then again, maybe that's their intention.

Same here. I am hitting up to 5 a day but they keep appearing in multiple form. I don't know who moderates this site but don't they also keep watch, or just leave it to us?

This is a USENET group, not a Google Group. It has no
moderator.

Yeah, USENET has been around for decades, but most of the old-
timers who started posting to alt.fan.barry-manilow before
Google came along are long gone these days. That's why in my
original post I included a link to an explanation on Wikipedia.
Here it is again if anyone's interested.

Thanks. But I still don't understand who removes the posts

All newsgroup posts go out into the USENET universe, and can
be read on a news reader. Google Groups is a news reader, and
since I don't read the newsgroup using Google Groups, I can't
say if anyone other than the author removes posts or tries to
shut something down.

My stand-alone news reader shows all posts, even when someone
tries to edit their post, or remove it themselves. I can read
everything, including the before and after edits, and posts
folks remove from Google Groups. You can remove a post using
Google Groups, but you don't remove it from USENET.

But since most people read alt.fan.barry-manilow using Google
Groups, it really doesn't matter. Just know, if you post
something and try to edit or remove it, you can't hide it from
me. ;^)

I know...TMI (Too Much Info). ;)

I'm trying to understand this Usenet thing, and in researching it looks like you must pay for Usenet readers, other than google. So my question is, why pay when you can access this group through google for free?

Do more research. I use a free news reader and a free news
server.

OMG! Have you seen the latest one advertising COUNTERFIET MONEY for sale? These people must really be stupid! I can't believe they post this crap and think it's ok to post illegal things for sale. I reported them and hope they get shut down.

I reported all the other ones too and now I see they don't show anymore. JW

They may not show to you, but the rest of us can see them. It seems we only see "blocked" of the ones we actually report ourselves. I was trying to block 5 per day, and the counterfeit money, etc. one came up on the 15th. I am getting so fed up with all the rubbish on here that I may well leave.

I've been posting on the newsgroup since 1996 or 1997. Over the
decades now and then we've been attacked by spammers, trolls,
and various forms of equine excrement. On a public newsgroup
you learn to just ignore it. Look at the subject line, and go
on to the next readable post. :-)

Thank you. I guess I am just obsessive about clearing them away! Need to learn to ignore them.

I understand. Once years ago we had some kind of robots spewing
literally thousands and thousands of large jibberish posts over
and over. They finally went away or someone sprayed them with
roach spray and killed their arses. ;^)

On another news reader other than Google Group you can delete
posts permanently as I do so you won't ever see them again. But
just scroll on past them if you can. :)

Will do. I also hadn't realised that even though I "report them as abuse" or whatever it says, they were still showing up for everyone else. I won't bother now. Thanks for the advice!

Yes, you have to block them yourself in order for them to be hidden from you. It only takes a very short time to go down the list one by one and report them. I don't care for the fact we have no way to delete them either so reporting them is all we have. JW

As the group is not moderated, who does it get reported to?
