Just finished baking cornbread for dressing, and a pecan pie for
dessert, plus the eggs are boiled for deviled eggs. At our age
we decided since there's just the two of us, we're tired of
wrestling with a large raw bird. So we went to Sam's and got a
deep fried turkey breast that we simply heat in the oven and
slice. No nasty raw turkey juice and no waste. Simple is good.

I wish all of you a.f.b-m folks who are still here after all
these years could drop by for a slice of pie. Instead, I wish
everyone a safe Thanksgiving with friends and/or family. I'll
raise a glass of wine to y'all tomorrow. :)

It's not "Turkey Day" - a focus on materialism. It's Thanksgiving. You can't make it up and change it as you go along.

Happy Turkey Day to you and yours, Scooter. :-).

We are wrestling a 19 lb bird. Two cheesecakes in fridge, hash brown cornflake casserole, sweet potatoes, and jeweled cranberries will be our feast.

Just chopped onions and celery for dressing, deviled eggs, and
preparing to cook and mash potatoes.

Later the tree comes down from the attic, and the "Corn Palace"
ornament will be hung. It's now officially Christmas season.

Okay, it's now Black Friday (or whatever we call it now that so many stores start it well before the actual day)
Anyway, a belated "Happy Turkey" to all y'all.
Since it's just me, I don't bother with trying to make anything. I made the mistake of trying to place a "to-go" order from our local Cracker Barrel... what should have been a 30-minute wait turned into well over an hour, and people who had arrived before me were STILL waiting for their orders when mine came up. Only for me to get home and discover that they forgot the pie.

Oh well. I have everything I need to make my own pumpkin pie anyway, including the Jim Beam. Hey... we don't argue with great-grandma's recipe. :-)

Since it's just me around here, I don't make anything. I wish I'd gotten my mother's recipe for stuffing, but it's lost (along with a couple of her other recipes) to the mists of history.

The only thing I made was the mistake of trying to place a "to-go" order at my local Cracker Barrel. They tell me it's a 45 minute wait... okay, I can deal with that... I get there and then have to wait another hour yet before my order shows up. Only for me to get home and discover that they forgot the pie. Grrrr...

I *may* try putting up my outdoor lights today but I'll probably wait until Sunday; it's supposed to be about 20 degrees warmer!

Hi Dave,

Happy Thanksgiving! I'd invite you over to our place if we lived closer to each other : )

Anyway, since you mentioned Cracker Barrel, I thought I'd post this link:

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/16/anti-gay-companies_n_4110344.html

We have a Cracker Barrel up here in N.E. but we don't give them our business for the reasons cited in the above article.

Hope your pumpkin pie turned out well. Mr Annie is a bit pissed at me because I made walnut instead of pecan pie; for the reason that pecans were $12.00 for 4 ounces and I needed 8 ounces for one pie.

Mr Annie: "What, I'm not worth $24.00?

Me: "Of course you are, honey" (puts walnuts instead of pecans into my shopping cart.....)

Best,
Annie

Four ounces of pecans for $12 is obscene. Here in Texas,
premium pecan halves are 9.95 per pound. Pieces are 8.95 per
pound. Sam's has 2 pounds of halves for $14.66, and they ship
nationwide.

FYI.

I always go to the Nut Vending Company in Fort Worth, TX, for my
pecans. They ship via FedEx or UPS. Here's a link to their
online pecan page of their site. They've got everything
"pecan." Halves, medium pieces, small pieces, and even pecan
meal. And anyone ordering should treat themselves one of their
Texas Pralines. Heavenly!

Hate to tell you this, but the majority of servers at my local CB are gay (and are truly some of the best wait staff ever). I believe the company has changed their practices since that article was written.

You are only hurting the servers hustling for a buck when you don't go.

Do they come to your table and say "hi my name is Tom and I'll be your server today. Oh and by the way I'm gay."? Making assumptions much? Unless you know them personally, I think it's kind of...I don't know...dang I can't think of the word I want. Prejudiced? Biased? Stereotyping?

You're correct that the company has changed their policies. I
noticed the article was five years old. More research might
have turned up this more current news about Cracker Barrel.

LGBT Alliance – Cracker Barrel Old Country Stores

In 2017, Cracker Barrel was the recipient of the 2018
Corporate Diversity Award from the Nashville LGBT Chamber of
Commerce. That same year, the LGBT Alliance collaborated and
partnered with Human Resources, Benefits, and the Chief People
Officer to influence the addition and policy change of same-

Additionally, the LGBT Alliance conducted passionate Spirit

awareness to the epidemic of bullying of LGBT youth which
received acknowledgment from Spirit Day founder Brittany
McMillan.

In Their Own Words: “The LGBT Alliance employee resource
group continues to grow in size and influence. Its members
today represent more than 11% of the corporate office

Our Favorite Moment: The LGBT Alliance worked with their

Rocking chairs are an iconic symbol of the Cracker Barrel

powerful statement. The LGBT Alliance has used these Rainbow

DC-Sharon and Scooter beat me to it on CB... and more thoroughly than I would have done it, too. :-) Now if they can find evidence of Chik-fil-A or the Salvation Army changing THEIR practices... ;-) (Actually, don't worry about proving me wrong on Chik-fil-A. Not one of my favorite places anyway, but I cave in once or twice a summer for that ice cream & lemonade thing they make. Like a lemon-flavored creamsicle... yum.)

But where do you shop that pecans are so obscenely expensive? I very rarely make anything with pecans or walnuts... either way, I just get 'em at Aldi.

I take the cheap/easy way out and buy a container of lite cool whip at Aldi. Works well enough for me.

Well... it's relative, I guess. As I type this Saturday night, it's 43 degrees here and has been raining steadily since mid-afternoon. But where you are, 75 is on the chilly side, yes? :-) I *did* see someone's house all lit up already last night, though.

Oh, yes. I get the fat free cool whip to cancel out the
calories of the pie. ;)

Compared to 110 Texas degrees, 75 could be classified as chilly.
But it's my total comfort zone - no heater, no air conditioner.

LOL! Yup, same reason I have a Diet Pepsi to go along with mine. (I tried fat-free cool whip and just can't deal with it, but "lite" works OK)

I got my outside decorations up Saturday - and yesterday we had a 45 mile an hour windstorm! It went from 65 degrees to 29 in a space of a few hours. (I'm in Arkansas). Fortunately we had a little advance warning and Home Depot had bags of decorative rocks. It's amazing what 25 pounds of rocks can do. Those suckers didn't move :)
